What Should We Report? Why Should We Report It?

Reporting player injuries and suspected child abuse is a critical element in keeping our players safe. These reports communicate any potential health and safety concerns with the league and, when appropriate, with the proper authorities. Timely reports will both protect our players and allow the league to evaluate our safety and training procedures on an ongoing basis. In addition, coaches and board members are legally required to report suspected child abuse.

Reporting Injuries

Any time during a game or practice that player sustains an injury that MAY require professional medical attention, a team coach should complete this Incidence/Injury Tracking Report. Keep in mind that some injuries, especially head injuries, may have a delayed onset of more serious symptoms. When in doubt, complete the form to be on the safe side.

Complete as much of the form as possible within 24 hours of the incident or injury. Leave any unknown or uncertain information blank - the league can follow up with the player, the family and the team as needed. Email a PDF, or deliver a hard copy, to the league Safety Officer.

Mandatory Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse

Coaches and Board Members are Mandated Reporters in California. Mandated. While reporting suspected child abuse is a moral imperative, Mandated Reporters have a legal obligation to do so, and can face civil and criminal penalties for failing to report.

A Board Member or Coach that becomes aware of potential child abuse must inform the San Diego Sheriff's Department or San Diego Health & Human Services Agency within 24 hours by telephone. The league President and Safety Officer must be informed if the suspected abuser is a volunteer with the league.

A written Suspected Child Abuse Report (SCAR) must be submitted to the San Diego Sheriff's Department or San Diego Health & Human Services Agency within 36 hours of making the initial report.
